Douglas Boulivar trained at the Royal Ballet School and has danced with the Ballet of the Twentieth Century, Dancers in Repertory, Utah Repertory Company, Bill Evans, Mel Wong and Anna Sokolow.

Class Description

Floor Barre
The first part of the class is conducted on the floor, where correct alignment and movement become part of the dancer's muscular memory. The body is centered, lengthened and strengthened, while maximum turnout and extension are developed. Floor-Barre faculty are trained and certified by Zena Rommett. Click here to visit the Zena Rommett Floor Barre™ website.

Martha Chapman Ballet

Martha danced with NYC Opera Ballet, NJ Ballet and others; performing across America and abroad. On DNA's faculty since 1997; and also for The School at Steps/Steps on Broadway, master classes, lecture demonstrations, workshops on injury prevention/maintenance, and on "Dance as a Career."

Martha's teaching philosophy connects thought patterns with body placement. Through images and body awareness, we learn control of bone placement, connecting this with use or release of muscle groups. This, with time and patience, builds dance technique! Dance unites body, mind and spirit, promoting health and well-being, true regardless of a student's level, from beginner to professional.

Class Description

Slow Beginner
This class clearly explains Barre (warm-up) and Center-floor exercises of the Ballet lexicon, breaking down technical execution of each step so students understand how movement sequences progress. The class builds dance technique by focusing on skeletal placement along with muscle strengthening & stretching and movement repetition. A great workout, too!

Beginner
Presumes basic knowledge of some ballet terminology; develops strength through repetition and placement through skeletal awareness and muscle action or relaxation. Complexity of class exercises and tempos increase from the Slow Beginner class, but class remains focused on proper technical execution of movements. Also great for advanced dancers recovering from injuries.

Slow Intermediate
For students with basic technique ready for the challenge of more complex class combinations and intermediate ballet vocabulary, but who still desire a thorough breakdown of the mechanics and execution of these more challenging steps and sequences. An excellent transition class from Beginning to more advanced levels!

Intermediate
For students ready for class combinations with increased complexity; quicker tempos, more directional changes and a more advanced step vocabulary than Beginning or Slow-Intermediate classes. New terminology is introduced in all sections of class, but still fully explained; more class time is given to Center Floor work than the Barre.

Intro to Ballet Workshop
6-session workshop for students who've never studied dance before or need a 'refresher' course, covering ballet vocabulary used in beginner dance classes. Students get weekly vocabulary handouts, and a "Q&A" for more detailed questions. A "user-friendly" class, where questions are encouraged, and all you need bring is your best effort!

Class begins with isolation warm-up patterns that result in a type of Horton-Dunham style focusing on sequential head to toe exploration. Across the floor work is where connective free flowing patterns that focus on rhythm and drastic weight shifts begin. The class culminates with a movement phrase that dynamically incorporates many of the ideas introduced throughout class, paying particular attention to the use of mindful weight shifts that help guide us towards longevity and clarity in a natural approach towards a more organic movement.

Int/Adv
A Modern/Contemporary approach Introducing connective rhythmic free flowing patterns, drastic weight shifts and gliding 'butter-like' movements releasing into the floor and challenge rhythmic space above.

Adv Modern Roots
This class's approach to rhythm, timing, space, pause and flow explores movement styles ranging from an array of aesthetics that have shaped the African-American social dance idiom. The beginning of class focuses on a more grounded approach to technique and will infuse a more classical approach to balance and extension. Combination driven, this class will push students into more complexed and challenging connective free flowing patterns that focus on drastic weight shifts and gliding 'butter-like' movements that release into the floor while simultaneously challenging the space rhythmically. Oliver Steele Modern

Oliver and Teri Steele are both Artistic Directors of Steeledance.

Class Description

Slow Intermediate Contemporary Modern (Focus & Intent)
Class starts on the floor with an efficient "Modern and Pilates/Yoga-based warm up." Through short exercises one is introduced to the movement and technique principles basic to Mr. Steele's intense and expressive choreography. "Mindful work equals non-thinking results." By focusing on the basics with clear and mindful intent, one will be able to master each prior to approaching more complex movement sequences, thus preparing one for the intermediate level.
Intermediate Contemporary Modern (Technique & Strength)
Class starts with a short continuos "Modern- and Pilates/Yoga-based warm up" which engages the core and creates balance. The exercises concentrate on natural physical placement as well as technical alignment and finding the strength to support such within movement. This allows for a deep exploration of the proper use of gravity by finding "center" initially and secondly by investigating "bilateral and circular off-center" (for the largest range of motion possible) as well as "moving-through-center" (to create clear, dynamic and efficient transitions). Phrases range from intense and expressive to athletic or fluid and musical. The final goal is to achieve high quality in movement, grounded crisp technique, a clear mind along with encouraging confidence in one's ability as well as knowledge and learn how to implement such into choreography.
Advanced Contemporary Modern (Movement & Endurance)
Class begins calmly inspired by Yoga, Pilates and Thai-Chi. The warm up, which seriously addresses core strength, is grounding and centering and is infused with exercises which incorporate all aspects of the "Intermediate Technique Principles" and engage one to move with contemporary qualities that still utilise "Classical Modern Technique" and "Classical Technique." Considering natural physical placement one is encouraged to push the limits of technical alignment yet never compromise the safety of the body. Phrases are long and range from intense and expressive to athletic or fluid and musical while their design will always surprise with constant directional changes. As the body is getting exhausted towards the end of class the final goal is to maintain high quality in movement, grounded crisp technique and a clear mind through self implementing one's ability and knowledge into choreography with confidence (self-teaching).
