Workshops @ Dance New Amsterdam

CHOREOLAB is an eight-week guided process that allows choreographers to create work within a supportive, safe, and inspiring environment. Weekly, the participants will show work in class, and will receive feedback from both the group and the facilitator. Participants will have access to reduced-rate and free studio rentals, and the workshop will culminate in a showing in DNA’s 130-seat theater.
Choreolab is funded, in part, by a grant from the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation.
Performance Project
The Performance Project offers DNA Students an opportunity to expand upon relationships with DNA Faculty and Modern Guest Artists by pairing students with teachers of their choosing to work collaboratively on a creative project presented in a three evening concert. The Performance Project provides all levels of dancers the chance to experience the creative process of dance through rehearsals and performance.
Modern Guest Artist Series Mini Workshops
As a part of our ongoing commitment to professional dancers, Dance New Amsterdam is incorporating periodic specialty workshops into our Modern Guest Artist series. These mini-workshops are taught by our rotating roster of guest teachers from around the world. Our guest artists represent the broad spectrum of styles in modern dance today, from contemporary and post-modern dance to contact improvisation and release work. These mini-workshops allow our diverse guests to share specialized knowledge with our students. The workshops run the gamut from Partnering and Improvisation to Dance Theater Composition. Unlike our regular classes, preregistration will be available for all Modern Guest Artist Mini-Workshops.

Intro to Ballet
with Martha Chapman
DATES TBA
Martha’s teaching philosophy emphasizes connecting the thought patterns that facilitate physical movement with placement of the body. Through the use of images and body awareness, the mind learns to control the placement of the bones, connecting this with the engagement or relaxation of different muscle groups. These things, along with time and patience, are the building blocks of dance technique.
